The natural beauty of Heathcote-Avon Estuary setting for the Mt Pleasant Community Centre offers a seed of inspiration for a poetic and ecological architecture. The exceptional bio-diversity of the estuary habitat and its complex inter-active ecologies provide outstanding examples of rich synergies between species and ecosystems which enable continuous co-evolution. Lessons from nature’s techniques of environmental adaptation provide insights for practical and poetic architectural responses. Observing and analysing the architectures of the Estuary such as water surface patterns, wave structures, crustacean or shell architectures reveal highly efficient geometric rhythmic structures assembled from multiple repeated elements combined into larger assemblies to create a singular whole such as the water surface of the estuary itself. These insights inform a poetic bio-mimetic architecture inspired by the nature of the site.
FOLDED-WAVES: Wave-like folded surfaces fabricated from triangular billets create strong and stable surfaces to form the entire building structure and skin including wall and roof assemblies. Primary spatial elements within a singular system can be prefabricated economically with the use of repeated building components.
LEAN - (Lean Synergetic Architecture more with less) Engineering and Architecture are designed as one. The roof and wall architecture integrates skin, structure and services in a highly performative minimal yet flexible envelope, The building provides a very efficient net to gross ratio to maximise each square metre for activity space. Minimal internal circulation reduces costs and facilitates better interaction between internal and external spaces.
LIFT (Lifting up to connect beyond): to benefit from the wonders of this location, a raised level for the Activity Studio and balcony at first floor level within the Atrium provide magnificant views out across the estuary and good quality natural light.
FLOW The spatial weave and flow of the building houses the various activities in a more efficient and flexible way to enable easy access and continuous flow between inside and outside. The flexibility of adjacent spaces enables these spaces to work in parallel without compromising each other.
